September 30, 2025 Eight days past both the equinox and the new moon I watch the sunrise. Does this mean that I will have a good day. What signs and portents give me a clear view? The new moon was equal to the task of the equinox, yet from the night sky it could not be seen. There it is. The moon, it comes and goes. Like roses in the garden, the moon can be appreciated. Unlike roses in the garden, it cannot be picked. Both are unpredictable. The moon is predictable, but only if you want to see it this way or that way. If you look for the moon each night, you will miss out on seeing it on the days she appears during the day. You will also miss her when she is new. So, she was new at the equinox. She shied away from us all while the world’s nights and days were equal to each other. That was an equatorial event. Around the middle the equinox was the fattest. Now we get to lighten our load of light. The darkness gets heavier. Finally, the sun will go south and leave us alone more often. We will see the moon more at night because the night will be here longer. It is not darkness falling upon us. It is us seeing in the dark. Revealing ourselves to the darkness only makes it brighter. As the sun falls back to give the south more light, we learn to see in the dark. We use our own energies to light our way. We bring ourselves into the dark spaces created for us during this wonderous time. Our light drops into the dark places. Lighten up those little spots within and find some quiet within the din. Light like silence makes the dark and drear become solitude. Horizon now fills with sunlight as dawn breaks. Tree toads remove their voices from the morning songs begun by lingering birds yet unmigrated. Soon the woods will be silent save for the crunch of fallen leaves and eventual crusty snow. Bring me to this place where the insects no longer hover at eye level challenging. The barren limbs of trees still reach out to the sky. They scrape at it more than when their leaves would paint varied colors there. The pools of water no longer full of fowl and softening awaiting the ice sheets and blankets of snow for winter’s long rest period. Do we not know that we should follow? We are new like the moon, hidden from view, waiting to be seen. We are the equinox balancing out light within pending darkness. We are the faithful knowing this too shall cause us more reflection that will bring us peace. We can make that choice. We can run a bit quieter, even if we get crunchie like the leaves and snow. We can be like the vast silence of a snow-covered lake that sends sounds and echoes far and away. We can and do this. Like the nature all around us, we do this. We can make the choice to let ourselves do it. We can fight the choice until it beats us down and we feel defeated. We can make the choice to become the lights that glisten across newly fallen snow. We can make the choice to twinkle bright and wonderous. Our hearts sing the songs of birds and toads while all around they have gone to sleep. We are the light shining across each other’s darkness. Allow the joy to be felt as we slow our pace awaiting the arrival of solstice revival. Be as new as the moon and equal to the night.
